Getting started

Tuesday’s workout:

Time: 4:10 p.m.

Location: Crunch

The workout: 16 minutes (2.09 miles) on the treadmill, eleven upper body weight machines, 16 minutes (2.14 miles) on the treadmill

The music: Forgot the iPod, it was Q101

Felt like: Once I convinced myself to do it, I thought I could go forever

Total weekly mileage: 21.23/30

I got up at 5:45 to help out with my publication’s biggest conference of the year, and was anticipating getting off work almost two hours early to compensate. Unfortunately, getting the paper out the door dictated that I stay until 4, and by then I didn’t even feel like running anymore. But I knew once I got started I would feel fine, probably even better than before, and I was right. After only 4.23 miles and some careful weights, I came back to my apartment in that tired-but-in-a-good-way state and still had time to make and eat dinner before parking it in front of the TV at 7.

I even got myself up to 8.2 mph for the better part of a mile over the course of the run. Hoping that’s still going to be the case, I’d love to build even a little more speed into some of those shorter runs, maybe get a little sprint in at 8.8 this week.

I have to decide by February 1 if I want to register for the Chicago Marathon, which takes place on October 12 this year. I’m leaning towards going for it, but hoping I won’t be in the midst of a move that weekend, although that shouldn’t be the case as my lease here is up Oct. 1. My plan is to think about a full year racing schedule over the next couple of days. I’m about 99 percent sure I’m doing the Shamrock Shuffle in March, I’m also thinking of registering for the North Shore Half Marathon in June. Full consideration should be completed by Monday.

The run is over. Now what?
