In the long run

Sunday’s workout:

Time: 11 a.m.

Location: Crunch

The workout: 10.5 miles on the treadmill in 1:20:35

Music: Same as the last week, Spoon and Peter Bjorn and John

Felt like: An uphill battle that got easier in the last two to two and a half miles

Total weekly mileage:10.5/30

I’m having trouble with mile five. I think the main cause of that is coaxing myself through the workout based on what percentage of the run is left. After forty percent of the run is over, the thought that I have six miles still to go is a struggle. Plus, when I start a treadmill long run, I start it at 7.0 miles an hour and move up gradually to 8.5 or 8.6 miles an hour, so the second half of the run is much faster. If you divide the run in half by time rather than mileage, I ran about 4.9 in the first half and 5.6 in the second. But the halfs felt the same: getting from 4.3 to 4.9 was just as hard as getting from 9.9 to 10.5. Maybe I should start a little bit faster and acquire less pace throughout the fun.

The recovery process was more laborious today than perviously. I had to pop a squat in the locker room and again on the L platform to keep from keeling over, and my legs still really haven’t stopped twitching, especially in the mid-quad region. I spent the majority of the afternoon horizontal on my couch watching a movie, during which I ultimately nodded off. I dragged myself out to Argo Tea at about 4:30 and am feeling close to normal, if not slightly gelatanous in the thighs.

The run is over. Now what?
