Wednesday’s workout
Time: 5:15 p.m.

Location: Crunch

The workout: 30 minutes (3.9 miles), 45 minute spin class, 15 minute ab workout

Music: Oh god, ask the spin trainer. late 90s hip-hop…

Felt like: First two miles: decent. Second two miles: BLAH! Spin: Ouch. Abs: Double ouch.

Total weekly mileage: 18.32/30

My co-editor Jenn has encouraged me to try spinning to try something different, and I think it’s a valuabe idea because not only does it get me out working out with other people, it gives me a chance to use different muscles and get someone else’s advice on what I should be doing.

However, I still can’t seem to get away from wanting to run every time I go to Crunch. With an hour between the end of work and the beginning of spin class, it seems logical to throw a little run in there, but it made me nervous that I would be burned out by the end of the spin. The run itself was kind of marginal: it had been a long day that contained too many interviews and too much waiting around for other people to do stuff for me so I could get my work done, and the effect on my mood carried over a little bit.

The spin, while different, is not something I’m entirely used to yet. The dark room, unfamiliar music and occassional yelling is a bit out of my comfort zone. But overall, I felt good about getting something different done and it could help me branch out to even more different things, or perhaps branch back into triathlon.

The abs were easily the best part of the workout. The trainer used a circuit system that included three sets of six thirty-second excercises, the first focusing on the upper abs, the second on the lower and the third on the obliques. The sets combined static and ballistic movements to encourage speed and he ability to “suck it in.” The next day I thought I was sick my stomach hurt so much. I’d love to try it again so I could write about it in more detail.

Overall, the post-workout endorphines were great and I’m excited to try all of this again.

The run is over. Now what?
